Wincent's Reflection

In this globalization era, many experts from different fields such as engineering, architecture, and interior design are facing challenges on innovating new ideas. To innovate a better idea, experts must build their ideas to be simple, creative, and efficient. Therefore, biomimetic is practiced by a lot of experts to develop and create a better products. Biomimetic is known as a method which seeks the solution to human challenges by using attributes, methods, pattern, and strategies from the living organism.

            In my personal opinion, this module not only developed my communication skills, research skills, and team work, but it also helped me to practice and perform critical thinking, and improving my software skills. Additionally, I have learnt how to develop a more advanced product based on simple and useful attributes from the surrounding.

            By being given the opportunity of being the project designer, my role is to come out with an innovative and efficient design. In maintaining this role, not only I have learnt how to practice the Solidworks software, but I also had an opportunity to learn from each of the team’s member, their way to do research and analyzing skill.

For this project, we are doing research on the hedgehog’s spine. This research includes the science behind the spine, and technology that others have done research on about the shock absorbing qualities of the spines. When hedgehogs are mentioned, some people might misunderstand a porcupine to be a hedgehog. Although both species are from the same family, the differences between both species are porcupine has a detachable and hollow quill whereas a hedgehog has a solid and non-detachable quill. Since a hedgehog’s quill is non-detachable, its spine has the ability to act like a spring to absorb all the impact, which acts as their self-defense system. Thus, the team decide to implement this ability to the helmet in order to increase the safety for the helmet user.

In conclusion, after several months of practicing biomimetics, this knowledge gives me the chance to think critically for a better ideas. It is believed that if you observe the surrounding living organisms, each has its own behavior, attributes, and strategies which might help humans to solve challenges.
