Design of the Helmet

Design Process

The 3D model of the product is designed based on several factors. The usage of the helmet can be for construction, cycling, and other sport activities that requires a helmet. It is designed to have both, an aerodynamic shape and be safe for usage. The middle part of the helmet is made from hedgehog inspired shock absorber, while the outer layer mimics the shape of a bird which has a streamlined body shape. This will decrease the drag force and increase the aerodynamic force. Additionally, a comfort memory foam will be used as the inner part. This is to ensure that the user not only feels secure, but also experiences a comfortable helmet. In order to have a user friendly product, the front and rear part of the helmet is designed to have a slot to place the safety LED light.

Based on the research, it is found that the shock absorber is manufactured to mimic the texture of a gel that is made of sorbothane material. This material is a newly developed silicone that is engineered to absorb forces of up to 2000N/m2. Thus, by implementing this technology in to the helmet, the helmet can be more durable and have high safety.

However, having financial support has always been one of the challenge that is faced by either an entrepreneur or inventor. Therefore, to raise the fund for manufacturing, a crowdfunding platform will be done by team. One of the platform that is popular to use in engineering field is “Pozible”. In this platform, a synopsis and a proposal of the project has to be attached on the main page. This is to allow the funder/customer to understand what the project is about and how it is beneficial for them. Not only to raise funds, but this is also help the inventor or entrepreneur to be able to gage the response for their product from the society.

Based on personal experience and observation, a lot of engineers are inspired for their idea from nature. This can be seen from the surrounding object such as a bullet train, which mimics the kingfisher’s nose cone to increase the aerodynamic force, ginkgo stick notes, and many more. This shows that by using a nature behavior as inspiration, more invention can be created. This might increase the efficiency and increase the society living quality.
